Original Song #11 - I Got a Song to Write

Procrastination turns into inspiration in this case

I’m always chasing a song, whether scribbled out on index cards or stuck in my mind.

After one year of songwriting, I find the most difficult part is to finish the damn thing. If it’s not the singing holding me back, then it’s getting up to speed on editing on the DAW (digital audio workstation).

So I have a backlog of songs that need to get out into the world sooner rather than later. It’s holding my creativity in check as I deal with production issues.

Truth be told, I needed a year to figure out songwriting mechanisms and get a sense of what I’m doing. As 2023 revs up I am confident of my direction and am ready to shift into a higher gear.

Shout Out:

I’ve absorbed a ton of information on songwriting over the last year. It is always valuable to figure out the conventional wisdom and then judge your own personal approach.

I’ve never been on the normal track. But I like to learn the normal ways of doing things to see where I fit in the big picture.

There are two songwriting channels that deserve mention in helping me to navigate the musical landscape. Songtown is out of Nashville and takes a very traditional path, while Songwriter’s Chop Shop highlights rock-pop artists and breaks down the magic.

Lyrics:

I gotta song to write
It ain't going nowhere
It don't sound quite right
No magic in the air

I got something to say
It's been on my mind
If the words fail today
I'm just wasting my time

Where's my muse
When I need him the most
Must be hiding
With the Holy Ghost

Guess, I gotta feel the pain
Of getting it all wrong
It's hard to reach inside
And dig deep for a song

I gotta carry on
I ain't gonna quit
Only need one song
To make it be legit

Where's my muse
When I need him the most
Must be hiding
With the Holy Ghost

I gotta song to write
It ain't going nowhere
