Original Song #4: This Old Guitar

Sometimes a song is just simple and natural. Nothing fancy here. A basic chord progression with the right tone and respect for the subject. For me, this is a love song.

Song Background:

Returning home from a visit to the USA, I was stuck in a quarantine hotel without a computer or a guitar. It was day 2 of 14 when family was allowed to bring us these essentials. I've had the same Ventura guitar for over 40 years, my first one. It just seemed appropriate to write a song about our long relationship while being locked up together. (By the way, I got out after 7 days due to a policy change.)

Shout Out:

Growing up in the swelter of Wichita Falls, Texas set the tone for my erratic guitar playing. I first watched my high school buddies play in Craig Barker's mom's reconverted garage beauty shop (It had air conditioning). I finally got tired of listening and bought the Ventura at the downtown music store, across from Sears, just before going off to college and the faraway world. That early exposure took a long time to blossom, but I'm grateful to those boys for letting me sit in.

Lyrics:

This old guitar, it's been a long time
We've been together since '79
This old guitar was made in Japan
But it settled in Texas to be in my hands

It's not a fancy brand
And I ain't in a band
It just waits every day
For me to pick up and play

This old guitar, was made for the road
I took it overseas, where I've grown old
This old guitar, got a new spruce top
It sounds even sweeter, so I won't stop

I'll never be alone
When I hit the right tone
It digs deep into my soul
When I try to rock 'n' roll
When I try to rock 'n' roll

This old guitar, it's been a long time
We've been together since '79
